JONESBORO, Ark. — In northeast Arkansas, work is underway to modernize the electric grid.

Around 50 Craighead Electric technicians are stringing fiber optic cable to provide high-speed broadband internet service.

This is phase one of the "Empower" broadband project, which should be completed by the end of the year.

Customers from Walnut Ridge to Paragould will have internet speeds of up to 1 Gigabyte per second.

In the next seven years, more than $100 million will be invested in the roughly five thousand miles of fiber optic cable installed across northeast Arkansas.

It should create more than two dozen permanent jobs.
