The Garland County Quorum Court appointed Vivian Thomas to serve the remainder of the county treasurer's term Monday night.

Ten justices of the peace voted for Thomas, who's been acting treasurer since Tim Stockdale retired last month with more than three years left on the term he was elected to last year. Thomas was Stockdale's chief deputy for nine years and has worked in the county courthouse for 16 years, including five in the county clerk's office. She was in banking prior to working for the county.

"Congratulations, Vivian," County Judge Darryl Mahoney said after the vote. "I know that you've already been assuming your responsibilities. Tomorrow should be no different than any other day, other than we'll get your name on the door just as quick as we can."

The treasurer is the county's chief investment and disbursement officer, responsible for managing tens of millions of dollars in deposits and distributing funds to county offices and taxing entities such as school districts.
