Arkansas has made some changes to the state’s unclaimed property program to make it more secure for Natural State residents searching for forgotten loot.

State Auditor Dennis Milligan said the website for The Great Arkansas Treasure Hunt unclaimed property search moved on Feb. 1 to a new address at ClaimItAR.gov. The new site for the program came on the same day Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders declared Feb. 1 as Unclaimed Property Day in the Natural State.

The state has over $1 million in unclaimed property, Milligan said. This comes from an account holder not being able to find an account owner for such things as utility deposits, life insurance proceeds, stock or mutual fund shares or even assets left in a safe deposit box.

Residents interested in learning if they had any undiscovered treasures had to file information with the state, including somewhat personal details including their name, address, and Social Security number.

The change in website address from the old ClaimItAR.com to ClaimItAR.gov was to add a layer of comfort and legitimacy for Arkansans entering their SSN by adding a .gov prefix to the address to signify its government alignment, the auditor said.
